a lagged post

the conclusion to the frauenbundesliga at the start of the month was thrilling. turbine potsdam pipped bayern by one goal and duisburg by one point.

the game in potsdam ended about 5 minutes before bayern's game. i was watching all 3 games. when the whistle finally blew, the contrast couldnt have been greater.

duisburg started the day as outsiders, because they needed both bayern and potsdam to not win, if you haven't already figured out the math. and when potsdam and bayern both took the lead in their respective games, we knew, they knew that they were not going to win the title.

nevertheless, they still went in search of goals. 5-0. the urgency, the hunger they showed struck me.

7 players were leaving the team at the end of the season.

it was as if they wanted to give it their all, to go out on a bang on their last game together as fcr 2001 duisburg, european champions and german cup winners 2009.

deep down, i applauded them, because to me, they had the best team in the league.

the other tournament i sort of caught, the montreux volleyball masters, in particular, the brazilian team, also struck me.

on their team are a player of japanese descent and a player of german descent. you see it in the name, in the face. it is a reflection of the immigration trend.

the other thing that struck me was that player of german descent, marianne steinbrucker. in the last game of the group stage, when they had already secured first place, they were playing poland.

poland really put up a hell of a fight, and brazil even lost a set and trailed for periods.

i saw the fury in her eyes, and i knew this was someone who hates to lose.
