we survived

"we might have made it to the last four last season and we have tradition and a proud history, but the fact remains that in europe, there are teams bigger than we are. and this means that if we want to go far in the competition, we have to play these teams. manchester united is one such team. the question is not how big they are, but how much we want it. and i believe we want it enough. i have full faith in my players to show it to me on the pitch." -huysegem

ajax hosts manchester united for the first leg of the round of sixteen, having gotten through after holding bayern munich to a draw, thanks to a stunning goal from boy wonder frederic thiers.

ajax amsterdam could not have gotten off to a better start. de bruijn dispossed matisse, feeding the ball to van kijns, who sent a sweet long ball all the way to sofronie. sofronie cut inside the south african pier verdonk, and took the ball into the box. as ridgewell, marawski and taylor prepared for his shot, he simply squared the ball to Yusuf, the egyptian calmly slotting in for the simplest of goals. three minutes, and ajax were one up.

fifteen minutes later, smith gave away a freekick at the edge of the area. flannen curled a superb freekick past the wall and beyond taylor's outstretched arms to double the advantage.

manchester united found themselves three nil down at half time, thiers rampaging past roberts on the left before delivering a pinpoint cross for sofronie to head past taylor.

the second half saw the visitors up a gear as they sought to revive their champions league ambitions. they finally got a goal five minutes from time, portuguese striker delporte rising to nod in matisse's corner.

"it is a fantastic result. we got the early goal, settled into the game. we were sharp upfront. i think we were the better team, our passing was good, the pressure was good, we disrupted their game. i think that was the difference between the two teams today." -huysegem

The second leg was a much different affair from the first, with the hosts pressing right from the start for the goals that would take them through. They got a goal midway through the first half, once again through Delporte. The onslaught continued, but Ajax held on for the remainder of the match.

“We hadn’t come here to defend, but Man United, they played very well, pressed us right from the start. We couldn’t play our game. But I am very proud of us tonight. We defended with our lives. We showed that we wanted to go on. We survived,” Flannen asserted after the game.

They might have lost the match, but Ajax had won the tie and thus went through to the quarterfinal, setting up a date with Galatasaray of Turkey.
