drinking in Riverafran

“Venprekers love to drink. Happy or sad, there always seems to be a reason to drink. In fact, they say there’s a drink for every occasion. In the Riverafran, there are many small drinking places called tavernas, where locals like to drink. Tourists come to, just to soak up the atmosphere. In these traditional places, they usually only stock up on local beverages. If Venpreken drinks don’t go down well with you, you should try the more modern pubs, where they have a wider selection.

This taverna here is called ‘Theodora’. It is one of my favourites. It has been around for like fifty years. The owner, Jaak Senereens used to sit here by the harbour and drink, while waiting for his love to come back. She never did. They say she married well, and had forgotten all about their promise. Old Jaak still believes that she will come back someday, and opened this place for her.

Unrequited love, failed marriages, breakups. People who experience these come here to drown their sorrow and speak to Jaak. He’s seen a lot. They feel better after that. Is it the alcohol, the company, or is it the knowledge that there is someone worse off than you?”
