dilemma
in world war two, as part of the nazis' aim of racial purity, they took children from the east, such as poland back to germany, give them german identities and german adoptive parents. after stringent tests of course.
and when the war ended, the search for these children began.
many of these children were, by then leading happy lives with their new families, and in the more developed west. they didn't want to go.
and the aid workers were torn. would you want to take someone away from a happy life to put him back in his rightful place, the communist Eastern Europe, which is actually worse off?
the same dilemma is now playing out in afghanistan. hamid kharzai doesn't want to exchange the taleban prisoners for the korean hostages because the last time he did something like that, he was criticised. and of course, there is some basis for that criticism. it will embolden the taleban.
what would you do, if you were hamid kharzai?
how would you feel if you were that kid being sent back to Poland?
how would you feel if you were that korean hostage?
