Croatia's game against austria saw a very interesting situation. off a corner, the keeper threw a quick ball down the center. the attacker skipped past the central defender who had come up to close down the space. but with acres of space, he chose to pass it between the defence. it wasn't a bad idea. it was also a good attempt. but the defender intercepted. and all the time, i was looking at the other attacker coming down the right flank.
the first goal from germany against poland was very well worked out. gomez threaded a superb ball with the outstep to the backtracking klose, who was maybe inches offside. anyway klose broke the offside trap, ran and squared the ball back to podolski. the gamble paid off, because all three forwards combined for this goal. when you put a striker on the flank, he has to come into the center, so the two up front must adjust accordingly to give him the space to come in. and i think all three forwards are quite mobile, so they are suitable for this system.
