johan derksen, a key ally of cryuff is criticising van basten. they say cryuff is falling out with van basten. cryuff, the great man who still has a lot of say in holland and barcelona affairs.
that was just before the ireland game.
and we proved derksen and all the critics wrong.
a starless team? i am not convinced by that.
to me, the 1998/2000 team was the best team in this era after the 1988 win. in that team(the core of the team was pretty much the same), they were all stars, yet in a way, none were. i just dun feel as if cocu was a star. nor was ronald de boer. what does being a star mean? maybe dennis bergkamp. but not really for the others. and despite all the disharmony in the dutch camp, i think they played as a team. so you might say that the 98/2000 team was a team of contradiction. they were also the best team in that they played the best football, and they went closest to emulating the class of 1988.
the 2004 team was a flop. but interestingly, i feel that there WERE stars in that team. or maybe it's because there were only a few stars, so they stood out as stars. van niistelrooy, robben.
in fact, after 2000, the dutch team seem to play less as a team, as compared to 98/2000, but become more characterised by individual brilliance. just look at robben and van persie in 2006.
so what am i driving at?
nothing much, just comparing the dutch team over the years.
but i seriously disagree tt the current dutch team is starless.
van der vaart, sneijder, huntelaar, robben, van persie are all on their way to superstardom.
2002 and 2004 were blips. 2004, we might have reached the semis, but it was a flop because of the czech game, and because we were too defensive, too cautious.
we have the players to bring us back to the level we desire.
if only people would give them the time and the chance.
seedorf, makaay, van niistelrooy, van bommel. it is all over.
don't you see? the 1998 and 2000 team had this trait: the players all made their mark together. namely the 1995 Ajax champs league win. they formed the core of the team. den with dennis bergkamp's genius, an emerging jaap stam...
i think we can see this happening again. the new generation taking over.
it's true that van basten had made errors. like bringing kromkamp and not bringing huntelaar. but relax, i think he has things under control.
relax, cryuff, relax.
