1988

you know, i am concerned about robben's form, or the lack of it. he isnt quite the same player as he was before he moved to chelski.

but the more i think about it, the more i think about 1988.

people compared 2004 to 1988. after the first game, in which i think van der vaart din play well, they were saying maybe he should be dropped, because in 1988, john van schip, a mainstay was dropped after the first game and they went on to win it. there were other similarities, but i can't think of them, because i dun think there was a serious injury.

but back to 2006. i think this resembles 1988 even more. if robben doesnt perform, it would really be more like john van schip all over again. and whats more, we have van der vaart(most notable of the injured personnel) brought to germany in less than 100 percent condition ala marco van basten in 1988. which means van der vaart must perform as van basten had done. another thing is that in 1988 they lost the first game. of course i want us to win all the way, but this years U21, the same thing happened.

so if you are asking me, if we like just scrape through the group stage, maybe it will be 1988 all over again. the ingredients are already there for 1988 to happen all over again.

of course i hope we can, in the words of van basten, "play the best football and win, so that there will be no debate about playing well and winning."
