a man lost between two cultures

i read akira yoshimura's storm rider, essentially a book about joseph heco, the first japanese to become a naturalised american.

towards the end, when heco looked back on his life, he realised that while he was an interpreter, he was always very busy, working with top-level people, doing important work. but ultimately, he was always doing things for others, at the beck and call of others.

how sad.

anyway the last part, about his tombstone. that it belonged to hikozo was in english, and below that was "here lies joseph heco" in japanese.

how very ironic and beautiful at the same time.
